About

The inaugral Digital Aesthetic was a city-wide exhibition, symposium, and – unusually for the time – project website.

Exploring contemporary artists’ use of digital and new media technologies, the project asked:

Is there a Digital Aesthetic?

Exhibition

The exhibitions included live interactive websites, works developed on CD-ROM, multi-screen installations, single screen projections for indoor and outdoor locations, and digital prints using a range of new processes.

Collectively, these works demonstrated a range of responses to the challenges and opportunities that rapidly developing new technologies presented at the time, and considered the fundamental creative paradigm shifts taking place.

Conference

The two day conference gathered together artist and academics leading in the field of digital art. Through talks, panel discussions, live internet link-ups and film screenings, the event considered digital art as a ‘hybrid form’ with infinite capability to translate, manipulate and appropriate.
