The Digital Aesthetic included a 2 day conference, held at the University of Central Lancashire and chaired by leading artist, film-maker and academic Professor Malcolm Le Grice.
Under the question: Does the digital enable a fundamental paradigm shift in art? Le Grice identified four main topics of discussion:
- Digitisation as the ultimate abstraction
- The fundamentally non-linear narrative of data
- Practical user intervention and interaction in new media; and
- the digital as a hybrid, not a medium.
Guest speakers included Woody & Steina Vasulka, Michael Gibbs, Prof David Garcia, Dr Susan Collins, Prof Paul Coldwell, Daniel Reeves, Nick Crowe, Catherine Elwes, David Bickerstaff & Chris Wainwright, Graham Ellard & Stephen Johnstone, Dr Katherine Meynell, Dr Jane Prophet and Marty St James; plus a video conference with Prof Sean Cubitt in New Zealand.
Conference Schedule: Friday 16th & Saturday 17th November, 2001
All talks and discussions were documented as VHS tape. The full collection is archived for academic study at the Electronic and Digital Art Unit, UCLan.
